  A marvellous little film from Ronald Neame an adaption of a story by Mark Twain. This scene shows the British attitude to wealth - it does not matter what you look like so long as you have money and plenty of it. "Never judge a book by its cover!" The restuarant are obsequious to the extreme when they ask for payment and are presented with the note. An impoverished American sailor is fortunate enough to be passing the house of two rich gentlemen who has conceived the crazy idea of distributing a note worth one million pounds. The sailor finds that whenever he tries to use the note to buy something, people treat him as if he is a King and let him have whatever he likes for free. Ultimately, the money proves to be more troublesome than it is worth when it almost costs him his dignity and the woman he loves. Gregory Peck and Joan Hickson (John Kelly?)

  Very sad to hear of the passing of a great British Actress Jean Simmons at the age of 80. Here is my tribute. Born in Lower Holloway, London, England, to Charles Simmons and his wife Winifred (Loveland) Simmons, Jean Simmons began acting at the age of 14. During World War II, the Simmons family was evacuated to Winscombe in Somerset. Her father, a physical education teacher (who had represented Great Britain in the 1912 Summer Olympics),taught briefly at Sidcot School, and sometime during this period Simmons followed her older sister on to the village stage and sang songs like "Daddy Wouldn't Buy Me a Bow Wow". Returning to London and just enrolled at the Aida Foster School of Dance, she was spotted by the director Val Guest, who cast her in the Margaret Lockwood vehicle Give us the Moon.Prior to moving to Hollywood, she played the young Estella in David Lean's version of Great Expectations (1946) and Ophelia in Laurence Olivier's Hamlet (1948). It was the experience of working on Great Expectations that caused her to pursue an acting career more seriously. Playing Ophelia in Olivier's Hamlet made her a star, though she was already well-known for her work in other British films, including her first starring role in the film adaptation of Uncle Silas and Black Narcissus (both 1947). Olivier offered her the chance to work and study at the Bristol Old Vic, advising her to play anything they threw at her to get experience; she was under contract to the Rank Organisation. Jean Simmons, the stunning beauty who played Kirk Douglas's wife in Spartacus and sang with Marlon Brando in Guys and Dolls, has died aged 80. The acting legend was plucked from obscurity at just 14 and went on to become one of Hollywood's biggest female stars. During an illustrious career that only ended last year, she appeared on stage, screen and television and was twice nominated for an Oscar. Two of her most famous roles were as Ophelia alongside Laurence Olivier in Hamlet and playing opposite Burt Lancaster in Elmer Gantry. She also won an Emmy for the 1983 TV mini-series The Thorn Birds. Born in London in 1929, Simmons was spotted in a dance class as a young girl and invited to make her movie debut in Give Us The Moon in 1944. Several minor films followed before British director David Lean gave her what was to be the breakthrough role of Estella, companion to the reclusive Miss Havisham in 1946's Great Expectations. The Times said Simmons, who earned two Oscar nominations during a long career that spanned seven decades, died at her home in Santa Monica after losing a battle to lung cancer. The movie star's manager could not immediately be reached for comment. Although she worked mostly in television in her later years, appearing in the hit 1983 mini-series The Thorn Birds, for which she obtained an Emmy Award, Simmons gained fame in the 1950s and 1960s after starring in several hit films. Her career took off after she appeared as the doomed Ophelia opposite Laurence Olivier in the legendary actor's 1948 production of Hamlet.
